About 989 XFM

1943

Atlantic Broadcasters Ltd. opened CJFX on March 25th, operating on AM 580 kHz with 1,000 watts.  J. Clyde Nunn, founding Manager.
 

1946

CJFX increased power to 5,000 watts. The transmitter site was located on Post Road.
 

1964

CJFX was given approval to increase power on 580 kHz from 5,000 to 10,000 watts.
 

1990

CJFX  increases power from 10,000 to 25,000 watts and relocates its transmitter to Pleasant Valley Road.
 

1998

Atlantic Broadcasters adds a rebroadcast transmitter for CJFX at Antigonish, operating on 98.9 MHz.
 

2001

A power increase for the FM re-broadcaster from 1,900 to 2,750 watts was approved.
 

2003

CJFX converts its signal to digital on the FM band, operating on the frequency of 98.9 MHz.  Effective radiated power  increases from 2,750 to 75,390 watts. The move from AM to FM took place later in the year, and on June 30, the AM transmitter was shut down for the last time.
 

2004

989 XFM adds a transmitter at Inverness, operating on 102.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 2,330 watts.
 

2009

Ken Farrell appointed General Manager of 989 XFM, becoming just the station’s fourth since its opening in 1943.
 

Today

989 XFM plays Today’s Best Music & Classics Too for its audience throughout Northeastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. XFM is the station people trust for accurate local information, farming information, funeral announcements and community meetings and events.  We are proud to serve and entertain more than 150,000 people in our listening area.
 

Our Home

Originally known as the Elmwood Homestead and built in 1895 by a prominent businessman Aubrey Kirk.  He was the owner of Queen’s Hotel and A. Kirk & Co. both on Main Street, Antigonish. The stately house is located on what used to be known as 85 St. Ninian street. The main driveway was designated Kirk Street after the National Philatelic Center was built in 1984.
