Tax rates have been set within the Municipality of the County of Antigonish, and again this year there’s no change. The residential tax rate remains $0.88 per $100 of assessment – the tenth consecutive year that the rate has not increased. The commercial rate will remain at $1.46 per $100 of assessment, which remains the lowest commercial tax jurisdiction in the province, which is now a 5 year achievement.
County Warden Owen McCarron says that key initiatives and expenses for this budget include the first installment of a pledge to St. Martha’s Hospital Foundation, and 3.3 million dollars put towards education. McCarron says this large chunk of funds to education is normal across the province:
This amount to education equates to 23% of the operating budget for the county. 25 % also goes towards protective services, including policing and fire protection.
