Action continues this weekend for two local basketball players representing Nova Scotia at the Basketball Canada National Championships in Winnipeg. 14-year-old Antigonish native Holly Scott is a member of the Nova Scotia Under-15 team that posted a perfect 4-and-0 record before running up against a strong B-C team in the quarter-finals last night, losing 71-60. They’ll now play in the placement round against Saskatchewan on Saturday. Scott was the second leading scorer for Nova Scotia in the round robin, averaging over 16 points per game in their opening three wins.
Meanwhile, Dr. J. H. Gillis standout Kalli MacDonald is wearing the blue and white for the Team Nova Scotia Under-17 team at the Championships in Winnipeg. The Under-17′s advanced to the semi-finals with a 63-56 win over Alberta yesterday. MacDonald has been turning in strong performances off the bench. The Under-17′s play in the Semi-finals against B.C. later tonight.
Antigonish native and defending national champion Mike Tate will return the Canadian Legion National Track and Field Championships this weekend in Ottawa. Last year, Tate captured gold in the Under 16 3-thousand-meter race and silver in the 12-hundred-meters. This year may prove to be a little tougher for Tate, with the distance runner moving up into the under-18 division. Tate runs the 15-hundred-meters this afternoon and the 3-thousand-meter race on Saturday.
The third annual John Arther Murphy 7-K Road Race takes place tomorrow morning in St. Joseph’s. The run starts and finishes at the Lakeside Community Centre, beginning at 9a.m. Anyone still interested in participating can register prior to the race at 8am.
The Men’s Senior Nova Scotia Golf Championship is continuing today with the third and final round at the Lingan Golf Club with a local golfer hanging around the top ten on the overall leaderboard. Ron Dugas of the Antigonish Golf and Country Club shot a three over round two yesterday and sits in a four way tie for tenth, at 6-over through two rounds in Sydney. Three other Antigonish golfers all had a tough day on the course yesterday; Duncan Chisholm shot a ten over to drop to 13-over par and 41st overall; Felix Sampson shot a 9-over-par on Thursday and sits in 45th; while Jack MacDonald was 11-over yesterday and sits 71st out of a field of more than 140 golfers from across the province.
It’s a big weekend in harness racing for Northern Nova Scotia as Atlantic Sires Stakes races highlight cards at both Northside Downs in Sydney and Inverness Raceway. Three Stakes races featuring 2-year-old pacing colts headline a 14-dash car in Sydney on Saturday; while 5 Stakes races are on the 15-dash-card in Inverness on Sunday afternoon. Post time for both Northside and Inverness is 1-thirty.
The Pomquet Acadians look to extend their lead atop the A-G-R fast-pitch league standings this weekend when they play a double header in Heatherton against the fourth place warriors. Pomquet has won five straight to improve their record to 6-and-1 on the year while the Warriors have lost their past two outings to drop their record to 4-and-7 on the season. First pict for Sunday’s double header in Heatherton is scheduled for 1-thirty.
There’s one game in the Highland Soccer League tonight as the Girls Under-10 Antigonish Celtics ‘A” team entertains the Central Colchester Riders at Columbus Field beginning at 6-thirty.
