It is a $1 million US award presented annually to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to their profession. It acknowledges the impacts of the very best teachers not only on their students but on local communities.  In a video on the Global Teacher Prize web site, MacDonnell says her role as a teacher in a northern community is quite different from her counterparts in other parts of the country.

MacDonnell has received high praise in developing a Life Skills program by motivating students to return to school with programs of interest to them from cookery to mechanics.  She has developed a life skills program specifically for girls, and helped in the creation of a fitness centre, and started a running club.  With her encouragement and guidance students have developed a community kitchen and a second hand store.
