The School Options Committee have voted on their recommendation for the Dr. John Hugh Gillis Feeder system. On the March 6th meeting, the motion was passed by a 7-4 vote to support the closure of the Antigonish Education Centre.
This move comes amid some surprise, as the general consensus after the third public consultation meeting was the keep the situation as ‘status quo’. SOC Chairperson Deepak Prasad says that after reviewing public feedback, however, the SOC decided to go ahead with this recommendation.
Deepak says the SOC does not have the final say, and the report has been submitted back to the school board now.
During the last Strait Regional School Board meeting, Superintendent Ford Rice said that the school board will vote in April on the status of schools in the DR JH Gillis Feeder System. The schools would be organized in the following manner:
H.M. MacDonald Elementary – Grade Primary – Six
St. Andrews Consolidated Elementary – Grade Primary – Six
St. Andrew Junior School – Grade Primary – Six
Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School – Grade Seven – Twelve
