St. FX X-Women Hockey #4, X-Men Basketball #8 in Canada

The latest CIS rankings are out.  The St. FX Hockey X-Women, moved up one spot to number four in the country following a 6-1 win over Saint Mary’s this week.  The Basketball X-Men held on to their number 8 position with big wins over Acadia and UPEI over the weekend.

St FX Runners perform well at Boston meet

Two members of the St. FX University track team posted impressive results at the Boston University Valentine’s meet over the weekend.  Fifth year X-Women runner Kelly MacDonald placed first overall in her heat in a time of 9: 58.02 in the three thousand metres.  The race featured 100 total runners.  Third year X-Men runner Connor MacGuire, the 2011 AUS Cross Country Championship also finished first in his three thousand metre heat.  He crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 8:28.89.  That race featured 107 runners.  The St. FX indoor track team will be in Halifax this weekend for a meet at Dalhousie University.  The AUS championship will be held February 25th and 26th in Moncton

Hockey’s Alex Normore, Michael Kirkpatrick and Basketball’s Tyrell Vernon named St. FX’s athletes of the week

St. FX University has named its athletes of the week. The female athlete of the week is X-Women

Alex Normore

hockey forward Alex Normore, a second year Human Kinetics student from Bedford,. Normore scored three goals and added an  assist in the X-Women’s 6-1 win over Saint Mary’s Friday night in Halifax.  Normore leads both the AUS and the C-I-S  in scoring with 23 goals and 27 assists for 50 points in 21 games.
The male athlete of the week is shared by X-Men hockey forward Michael Kirkpatrick and X-Men basketball Guard Tyrell Vernon.

Kirkpatrick, a first year Arts student from North Sydney. combined for 3 goals, 3 assists and a shootout winner in three games this past week.  Vernon, a third year Arts student from Hamilton, Ontario had two solid outings X-Men’s two  four point victories over the weekend. In their 87-82 win Saturday over Acadia, Vernon scored 24 points and had 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.  In the X-Men’s 70-69 overtime win over U-P-E-I Vernon scored 10 points and  had  five assists and four rebounds.  He also had a critical steal and basket in the last minute of overtime.

AUS men’s hockey playoffs set

The quarter final playoffs are set in the AUS Men’s Hockey conference.  The St. FX X-Men, the 6th seed, will play Moncton, who finished third in the conference.  The best of three series opens in Moncton Thursday night at 7.  Game two will be Saturday night at the Charles V. Keating Centre at 7.  Game three, if necessary will be played in Moncton next Monday night.

The other AUS quarter final series begins Friday in Charlottetown as UPEI hosts Acadia.
