Antigonish County Council looks to adopt its budget later this month

Council for the Municipality of the County of Antigonish is looking to set its budget for 2018-2019 on May 24.

Warden Owen McCarron says a lot of staff time is going into the budget, noting it took time to go through the requests for funding, which he says there were more of this year than in the past. Staff also had to work its way through the capital component of the budget, noting they are in the final stretch. Another budget meeting is set for May 22.

Currently, the residential tax rate in the county is 88 cents per $100 of assessment and the commercial rate is $1.46 per $100 of assessment. McCarron said the residential rate is the lowest in the province and the commercial rate is in the bottom third of the province.

Council has maintained the same residential tax rate for the last eight years.
