St. Ninian Cathedral is hosting the closing mass of the 125th Anniversary Year of the Sisters of St. Martha tomorrow, July 29, at 10:30 am. The date also marks the Feast of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Everyone is welcome to the mass, with a reception by invitation to follow.
Congregation leader Sister Brendalee Boisvert said the sisters did a lot this year to celebrate the anniversary, the theme of which is Standing Together in Hope: Shaping the Emerging Future.
Celebratory events over the last 12 months include a special art exhibit at the Antigonish People’s Place Library; Sister Garden, a series of eight plays about gospel hospitality by Laura Teasdale; donations to local libraries; and displays at the Antigonish Heritage Museum. The Sisters also celebrated with STFX, recognizing the long-time partnership between the school and the sisters, with things like dropping the puck at an X-Women hockey game, and planting oak trees.
Sister Boisvert said the sisters want to say thank you to the community and all those who were part of the Sisters of St. Martha’s history, calling it a mass of thanksgiving. She also thanked the bishop and Father Danny MacLennan for helping host the event at St. Ninian.
