50th Seamen’s Memorial Service set for Sunday, August 9 in Canso

Jul 28, 2026 | Local News

The Canso Lions Club is hosting the 50th Seamen’s Memorial Service set for Sunday, August 9, at the Canso Seamen’s Memorial.

Ray White, chair of the memorial service, called the 50 years of the event a testament to the community and a reflection of the importance of the fishery and how demanding it can be.

White said this year Lieutenant Governor Mike Savage and his wife will attend the event, along with provincial and municipal officials. After comments and dignitaries lay their wreaths at the memorial, families will lay wreaths remembering loved ones. Once all the wreaths are laid, there will be a reception at the Lion’s Club. A rain location for the memorial service is the Star of the Sea Church.

On following Sunday, August 16th, the wreaths will be taken to sea.

White credited the community for continuing to support the service and the memorial, calling the events something that belong to the whole community.

Canadian Radio Awards: 989 XFM Small Market Station of The Year

Broadcast Dialogue has announced the winners of the inaugural Canadian Radio Awards, which we’ve dubbed “The Howards” after our publisher emeritus Howard Christensen.

When Howard, a radio veteran and one of the original Broadcast News anchors, founded Broadcast Dialogue in 1992, he saw a need for both timely delivery of Canadian broadcast industry news, but also recognized the importance of creating a sense of community.

989 XFM is very proud to be the winner of the 2020 Station of Year – Small Market award.
