A big step forward for a proposed renewable energy park in Goldboro. Recently the province’s Environment and Climate Change Minister Tim Halman approved Nova Sustainable Fuels’ first Environmental Assessment. The company plans to use waste biomass from Nova Scotia forestry and forest-based industries to create low-emission aviation fuels as an alternative to petroleum-based fuel.
Project Director Andrew Parsons says there’s a demand for this type of fuel in Europe. He says there’s mandated requirements in Europe for sustainable aviation fuel.
The company plans to produce about 165,000 tonnes of this sustainable aviation fuel annually, which is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 85 per cent compared to conventional jet fuel. NSF plans to submit a second environmental assessment in 2027 for a proposed wind energy and solar farm and a transmission line to supply energy for fuel production.
Construction is expected to begin in 2028 with completion in 2031
