Agriculture minister Greg Morrow was on hand over the weekend to announce provincial funding for a beef abattoir in Judique.
Morrow , who serves as MLA for Guysborough-Tracadie, announced $250,000 for the MB Meat Company, with a provincial release stating the new facility provides custom slaughter and cut-and-wrap services for regional livestock producers while selling locally raised beef and other local products directly to customers.
Morrow said the funding means the province is investing in the only provincially inspected red meat abattoir on Cape Breton. He said when he visits farms on Cape Breton, one of the concerns he hears is about a lack of processing capacity in Nova Scotia. The new facility will help address processing capacity for Cape Breton and gives producers an option closer to home.
The provincial support is through the Nova Scotia Beef Processing Program at Perennia and is part of the Nova Scotia Beef Initiative.
