The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 59 in Antigonish is moving the local cenotaph from Chisholm Park to Columbus Field. Legion President James Matheson said the move, which is happening today, is for a number of reasons. Matheson said the current site isn’t large enough to accommodate the local Remembrance Day service. He also said the World War 2 arch at Columbus Field was removed for safety reasons and the Legion hasn’t be able to display WW2 or Korean War dedication plaques.
Matheson said they expect have a dedication service for the new site near the end of October though the date isn’t firm yet. The original cenotaph was installed in 1931 between St. Ninian’s Street and Main Street, before removing to Chisholm Park in 1976.
