The organization behind the Antigonish Community Fridge is adding a soup kitchen to its service.
There are currently two fridges and pantries; one outside the Antigonish Farmers Market and the other at Peoples’ Place Library.
Antigonish Coalition to End Poverty co-chair Wyanne Sandler says they decided to take the step of stocking the fridges with fresh and frozen soups, because of signicant demand.
The Soup Kitchen project will be officially being launched today, World Food Day. Volunteers will be serving free bowls of hot soup from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Antigonish Farmers Market multi-purpose room.
Large batches of soups will go into the fridges every two weeks.
The project has received grants from the Town and County of Antigonish and the Antigonish Community Health Board. The Antigonish Farmers Market is allowing volunteers to prepare the soups in their commercial kitchen.
