Antigonish Mayor Pleased with Recent Open House on Town’s Plans to Build a Solar Garden

Oct 12, 2021 | Local News

Following a recent open house, the mayor of Antigonish said she was pleased by the public’s reaction to the municipality’s plans for a solar garden.

On September 29, the town hosted an event at the Antigonish Regional Library Community Room to hear from the public on the 2.1 mega watt solar garden.  The province previously announced $7.5 million in funding for solar gardens in Antigonish, Berwick and Mahone Bay, while the province is contributing $8.9 million, and the municipalities are providing $6 million in funding.

Mayor Laurie Boucher said they were hoping to get 30 to 40 interested people, noting well over 100 folks came out to ask questions, noting people were interested in how they can buy into the solar garden.

The Antigonish solar garden, set for a former landfill site in Brierly Brook, will be capable of generating three per cent of the town’s electricity.
