Antigonish MLA Michelle Thompson recently commented on provincial funding for local seafood sector operations.
Three seafood businesses in Antigonish county were part of the 20 seafood businesses in Nova Scotia to receive $2.22 million through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Energy Efficiency Innovation Fund.
DSB Fisheries got $348,800 to convert their lobster fishing vessel into a hybrid propulsion system allowing for the reduction of fuel use. Fat Tuna Fisheries picked up $350,000 to convert multi-species fishing vessels with a hybrid propulsion system to provide lower energy costs for the company. Town Point Oysters got $350,000 for the electrification of an oyster barge that will be charged with existing solar infrastructure.
Thompson said the seafood industry is an important economic driver in the province.
In Pictou County, North Nova Seafoods picked up $60,000 for a roof-mounted solar photovoltaic system at its processing facility, and Aqua Production Systems got over $26,000 for a roof-mounted solar photovoltaic system at its facility for designing and building live seafood holding systems.
