Last night, Antigonish Town Council hosted an open house to discuss the findings of a recent flood plain study for the area, completed by consulting engineers CBCL Limited.
Antigonish Mayor Laurie Boucher called it an opportune time for the study results, as the town
is also in the process of aestablishing a new land use bylaw and municipal planning strategy. She said the prelminary findings in the study show there is land the town is able to develop behind Victoria Street and behind MacLellan Street.
Boucher said the study was also completed because of changes in the river and the fact two previous studies provided conflicting results. As for what the study showed about flooding in the area, the mayor said it proved the town’s efforts in the past helped mitigate flooding.
She said the study also factored in a 15 per cent increase in precipitation over the next 31 years, so they can compare the previous study, the new one, and what it could look like in 30 years.
