The Town of Antigonish is among a number of municipalities seeking extra funding for the fall’s municipal election.
Responding to a letter from the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities, municipal affairs minister Chuck Porter recently stated the Nova Scotia municipal elections will happen in October, and encouraged municipalities to continue preparing for the election with the current public health protocols in mind.
During Monday’s regular meeting of Antigonish Town Council, some councillors expressed concerns about what a campaign would look like in the fall, particularly in light of the possibility of a second wave of covid 19. Mayor Laurie Boucher said Porter’s also announced if conditions change for the worse, he would revisit the subject. Boucher said the NSFM sent another letter to the minister requesting extra funding to cover more polling stations and election staff as well as more time for advance polls.
As it stands, the municipal election is set for October 17
