Antigonish Town Council has some decisions to make about the situation with work underway on Bay Street.
Council called a special emergency meeting to discuss the situation Thursday evening following numerous complaints about the work taking place near St. Martha’s Hospital causing severe delays and other issues. During the meeting, attendees heard an update on the project from public works director Kyle Meisner, then paused the meeting to open the floor to hear from residents. Around 30 residents attended the meeting, with some wanting to know why the town waited until now for the work, particularly with other road work taking place in and just outside the town. Business owners mentioned lost revenue, while health professionals and first responders spoke about hour-plus wait times for people trying to get to and from the hospital, and others spoke about collisions and near misses on adjacent streets.

After hearing from residents, council entered an in-camera session to discuss its next steps, which could include pausing immediately, changing the work times, working until the end of next week to put down some asphalt and then pausing until the spring, or continuing the work and getting it done as quickly as possible.
Prior to going in-camera, Mayor Sean Cameron spoke to media about the situation.
Cameron said they could have an answer as early as later today but added it would more likely be next week.
