The Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre and Sexual Assault Services Association is looking to open a new building in Antigonish over the next few years.
Anita Stewart, executive director for the local women’s resource centre, said they purchased a piece of land on James Street on the site of the old Tim Hortons building, which is now demolished. Stewart said they are currently in talks with various levels of government, but do hope to open the new facility in 2027.
They partnered with Passive Design Solutions, with the intent of installing a net-zero, fully accessible space with room to expand the centre’s capacity, reduce its environmental footprint, and lower long-term operating costs.
The facility will include an expanded Lindsay’s Health Centre for Women, a new health and wellness area, a dedicated private space for their sexual assault nurse examiner program, office space for women’s support workers, and more.
Stewart said there are also plans to launch a capital campaign later on in the fall.
