yesterday.   The event was organized by university faculty. St. FX History professor Chris Frazer says the protest was part of a movement by academics in Canada and US called Scholar Strike.  This week, academics at post secondary institutions are protesting anti-black, racist and colonial police brutality in Canada, the USA and elsewhere.

Today, Frazer will participate in an online teach-in Nova Scotia.  Scholar strike is a two day event, where academics will pause their administrative and teaching duties to organize events to raise awareness on the issue.

Human Kinetics Professor Ornella Nzindykiyimana told the rally it has been established that racism is not a state of white hoods and burning crosses.  It is indifference and assumptions, complacency and laziness.  She says if you don’t do anything to fix the problem, then why should you expect it to be fixed.

Corrine Cash, senior program staff at the Coady Institute and a professor of Climate and Environment at St. FX says she’d like to see the school’s administration to create a multi-racial committee on campus that’s committed to a forensic study on all aspects of campus life.  From this Cash would also like administration to commit to a long term strategy on how to obliterate racism and discrimination.
