The Antigonish chapter of 100 Women Who Care heard the touching story Wednesday night of how their support has helped two families and five children from war-torn Somalia begin a new life here. Three months ago, 100 Women Who Care gave 78-hundred dollars to the local group Canadians Accepting Refugees Everywhere or CARE.
CARE’s Co-Chair Sue O’Brien says they were approached by a student at St. FX, now in her third year of Nursing about bringing her sisters and their children to Canada. That student, who was living in a refugee camp in Kenya, obtained a World Universty Service of Canada scholarship to attend St. FX.
O’Brien says the 78-hundred dollars they received helped CARE reach their fund-raising goal of 40-thousand dollars to support the two families.
O’Brien says the families have been in Antigonish now for two weeks. She says the families been overwhelmed by the kindness they have received from the local community.
