Changes announced by the Town of Antigonish to Construction Work on Bay Street

Dec 13, 2025 | Local News

Following an emergency meeting where members of Antigonish Town Council heard from residents about the affects the paving work on Bay Street is having on businesses and residents,  council met with Dexter Construction to make a change in plans.
Night work on the project will begin Sunday evening and continue until Thursday, December 18, when they plan to begin temporary asphalt paving for the area, with the goal of having it done by the end of day Friday. Town officials say only one daytime shift is expected next week, on Thursday or Friday weather permitting, to complete paving. Mayor Sean Cameron explained the work will then stop until spring.
Cameron thanked residents for coming out to Thursday’s emergency meeting and sharing their issues and concerns.
The work to be completed in the Spring will wrap up Phase 1 of the project on Bay Street. A phase 2 of the work would include active transportation trail work, moving and widening the street, and installing new water and sewer pipes. Cameron said he is not in favour of phase 2 taking place without first installing a secondary access road to St. Martha’s Hospital.
When asked if moving to night work will increase the cost of the project, Cameron said there is a slight increase.
