Elementary Students at East Antigonish Education Centre/Academy Record Mi’kmaq Honour Song

Nov 14, 2019 | Local News

A group of elementary students at East Antigonish Education Centre and Academy marked Mi’kmaq History Month in October in a special way.
The approximately 30 students, from Grades 3 to 8, have recorded the Mi’kmaq Honour song.  The famous spiritual composition was written by Mi’kmaq songwriter George Paul in the 1980’s.
The idea to record the song, involving Mi’kmaq and non-Mi’kmaq students, came out of a meeting of the school’s equity team, to promote culture and language
First Nation student success teacher Buffy MacNeil says the recording of the song has attracted a lot of interest.
MacNeil says the students who participated in the recording were really excited about the project. MacNeil says she has noticed a boost in their confidence. The school has committed to play the song every morning, which MacNeil says helps promote the language.
