A new exhibition has opened at the St. FX Art Gallery that features storytelling by Aboriginal youth in a community in western Australia through photographs. The exhibition is entitled “Our World in Photos-Connections”.
In the project, the Bardi Jawi youth were given cameras and asked to express themselves through pictures around four themes; feelings, relationship, country and interests. It was coordinated by the School of Population Health at Curtin University in Perth,
Australia.

The youth who took this picture calls his photograph “My Favourite Tree”. The youth explained this tree was next to his nana’s apartment. The youth adds the tree is special because his nana passed away. (Ken Kingston photo)
The idea to bring this exhibition to St. FX began a couple of years ago when university Senior Research Scientist Dr. Ann Fox was visiting Australia during a sabbatical.
The Director and Curator of the Gallery, Andrea Terry, says she welcomes a exhibition like this, featuring opportunities for self-expression by youth.
The exhibition continues until February 14th. It is sponsored by St. FX University and the Coady Institute.
