Fire Damages Home in Antigonish

Fire has extensively damaged a home in Antigonish. Town firefighters were called to the blaze at 15 Ross Street shortly before 10:30 Wednesday morning. When firefighters arrived, fire was seen on the second floor where flames and smoke were visible.

Fire department officials say the occupants of the home were alerted of the fire by smoke alarms and managed to escape. Two were taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Several cats were rescued in the fire, but two died in the blaze.

The fire department was assisted by the Town of Antigonish Electric and Public Works Department, RCMP, EHS and the Canadian Red Cross.

A total of 23 firefighters with two engines, one ladder truck, and a rescue unit responded to the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
