St. FX Political Science Professor expects Tight Race in 2019 Federal Election

Sep 16, 2019 | Local News

A St. FX Political Science professor says this federal election will be much different from the last time Canadians went to the polls four years ago. Jim Bickerton says 2015 was a change election, after nine years of Conservative rule led by Stephen Harper. Bickerton says there was a strong desire by voters to move away from that. He says Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau came across as a very charismatic leader and carried the day. He says Trudeau now has a record to defend and the results will be quite different in this region. In 2015, the Liberals captured all ridings in Atlantic Canada

Bickerton says nationally, the election result could potentially be very tight.

Bickerton says the two local ridings should create interest. In Central Nova, Liberal incumbent Sean Fraser will be challenged by well known entertainer George Canyon for the Conservatives, the NDP’s Betsy MacDonald, Barry Randle for the Greens and the Communist Party’s Chris Frazer. Bickerton says Cape Breton Canso will also be interesting to watch as long time Liberal Rodger Cuzner is not re-offering, opening up an opportunity for the other parties.
