With libraries across Nova Scotia seeking help with funding, the topic came up during Tuesday’s meeting of Antigonish County Council.
Council received correspondence from Lin Smith about library funding, and correspondence from Friends Of the Antigonish Library or FOAL. Back in December, FOAL sent letter to local municipal and provincial officials listing concerns about library funding.

During Tuesday’s council meeting, deputy warden John Dunbar asked if the council sent a letter to the province about library funding and was told council did but they have yet to hear a response. Dunbar said the library does a lot for community members, calling it vital.
Core funding for Nova Scotia libraries did not increase in six years. Previously, Eric Stackhouse, Chief Librarian of the Pictou Antigonish Regional Library, indicated there will be changes in 2026 in terms of reduced hours, fewer services and programs without more funding.
