Guysborough`s new food bank location is set for a grand opening Saturday.
The Guysborough and Area Food Bank, which also serves Canso and area since 2016, received $100,000 from the Municipality of the District of Guysborough this year for the construction of the new facility. The province also kicked in some funding, as did the food bank itself. Food bank volunteer Elizabeth Connolly said the general public was also supportive.
Connolly said the new location is on Green Street, which she said is close to the former location in the back of the Chedabucto Mall. Connolly said the former spot is good but they need more space, noting they were using two off-site locations to store extra stock. With an increase in clientele, she said it is becoming increasingly difficult to work in the smaller location.
The grand opening begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow, with stocking shelves and landscaping. The welcome and introductions with remarks from food bank representatives and government officials, followed by the ribbon cutting. A barbeque and cake are set for 1 p.m..
