The Independent Energy System Operator Nova Scotia (IESO Nova Scotia), the non-profit organization responsible for planning and operating the province’s electrical system has registered a Fast Acting Natural Gas Power Generation Facility near Salt Springs, Pictou County for an Environmental Assessment. It has also been registered for federal impact assessment screening.
The proposal is to construct and operate the facility, with the capacity to generate up to 300 megawatts of electricity. IESO Nova Scotia has launched a procurement process to appoint a proponent for the project.
Natural Gas will serve as the primary fuel used to generate electricity, but the plant will be engineered to allow further integration of cleaner fuels, such as hydrogen. The Salt Springs area was chosen because of its close proximity to the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 with completion in 2030.
Nova Scotians have until February 9th to publicly comment on the proposal to the province’s Environmental Assessment Branch
