Age Divisions in Minor Hockey to Be Renamed Across the Country

Nov 20, 2019 | Sports

Minor hockey is getting a bit of a shake up next season with new names for the age divisions.

Instead of terms like Novice, Bantam, and Atom, starting next year minor hockey divisions across Canada will go by their age divisions, such as under-7, under-9, and Under-18. Hockey Canada`s membership approved the change during a winter congress over the weekend.

Arnie Farrell, president of Hockey Nova Scotia, said Hockey Canada and its affiliated bodies across the country wants everyone to feel welcome when it comes to hockey participation. He said the branches heard concerns about age division names and a review of the names led to a recommendation of change.

Farrell said the name changes brings Hockey Canada in line with the International Ice Hockey Federation age division names.  While the changes come into effect for the 2020-2021 season, the various Hockey Canada branches will have things in place so minor hockey associations can register their players using the new names in April, 2020.
