The Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage invested $1.6 million in accessibility upgrades at community spaces and businesses, with groups locally and across the province getting grants for projects . Recipients include non-profit societies, municipalities, public institutions, and businesses.
Funding is provided through two programs administered by the Department ; the Community ACCESS-Ability Program and the Business ACCESS-Ability Grant Program. Both programs cover up to two-thirds of eligible project costs, to a maximum of $50,000.
Summer Street Industries Society in New Glasgow picked up $50,000, while the Municipality of Inverness County picked up $31,500. The Mabou Gaelic and Historical Society got $13,5000, the Lyon’s Brook Hall Society got $17,100, and the Antigonish Rivers Association $2,900
Eligible projects include physical improvements such as ramps, accessible washrooms and automatic door openers, as well as upgrades to signage, assistive technology, communications and transportation
