Two long term care homes in Guysborough County are changing hands. GEM Health Care
Group says it has acquired the Milford Haven Home for Special Care in Guysborough and Canso Seaside Manor from the District of Guysborough. The sale of the the two homes closed yesterday.
GEM Health Care Group is a Halifax based company that operates long term care and retirement living facilities in Nova Scotia and Ontario. It has been in existence for more than four decades.
The municipality has been exploring the future of the two homes since 2012. After the dissolution of the former Town of Canso, the Canso Seaside Manor was transferred to the District of Guysborough. Legal and financial advisors strongly recommended that the municipality look at selling both homes.
The District of Guysborough posted a request for proposals and narrowed the list of possible buyers down to four. The municipality eventually decided to negotiate the transfer of assets to GEM Health Care Group.
No jobs will be affected by the ownership change.
