Last month the Municipality of the District of Guysborough sent a letter to the Department of

District of Guysborough Warden Vernon Pitts
Environment seeking information about the status of a former gas station site, property of Irving Oil Ltd., located on Main Street, Guysborough. Council had recently discovered that the site had historic hydrocarbon contamination of both water and soil.
At Wednesday night’s regular council meeting, council was informed that the Department of Environment had responded to their letter informing them that the information could only be obtained by filing a Freedom of Information Request.
Warden Vernon Pitts said such a response from the department was not acceptable and that council had understood, from other sources, that Irving had submitted a plan for the site and was waiting for provincial approval.
The MODG wants to be informed about the plan and will take the issue up with the local MLA Lloyd Hines.
