Several development agreements for more residential units came before New Glasgow town council at Monday’s regular monthly meeting, and all but one were approved.
The largest of the approved agreements is with Tiertoo Properties, which wants to build three six-story apartment buildings as well as a row of two-story townhouse units over several years, providing 303 residential units. These will be built on several acres just off Trenton Road.

One project was met with resistance, as many neighbours of the former Acadia Street school came to the public hearing before the council meeting to express concerns over a plan to convert the shuttered building into 43 separate residential units. The two main concerns were that so many units in a neighbourhood of mostly single family dwellings would result in excessive traffic, and that the development plans did not include enough parking spaces, leading to much more on-street parking.
Councillor Fred El-Haddad asked if it would be possible to amend the development agreement to address the resident’s concerns, but was advised by town Solicitor Frank DeMont that the process only allows council to take a yes or no vote on the proposal. Council unanimously voted the proposed agreement down: it will be up to the developer whether to draw up a new agreement to present in future.
