The Legion branch in New Glasgow is looking for more smokers to join their cigarette butt recycling program.
A presentation was made to town council last night explaining the campaign – for over a year the New Glasgow Legion has been asking smokers to save their butts in a plastic bag or covered container, instead of throwing them on the ground or into the trash. The collected butts are packaged and shipped to Terracycle , an Ontario company which recycles some of the materials in the cigarette filters and safely disposes of the rest. The company pays one dollar per pound of butts collected to the Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign.
Council agreed to spread the word of the recycling campaign through their social media : those who are looking for more information can contact New Glasgow Legion Branch # 34 and ask for Patty Heighton or Peter Junger.
