With single-use plastic bags a thing of the past in Nova Scotia, The Nova Scotia Federation of
Municipalities are looking at other packaging.
Pam Mood, president of the NSFM, said the they are asking the province to develop legislation and regulations supporting an extended producer responsibility or EPR for printed paper and packaging.
Mood described it as a program transferring the cost of managing certain materials from the customer to the manufacturer. She said they have been focussing on having this installed, calling it a top five priority for the NSFM, noting 80 per cent of Canadians live in provinces where EPR programs exist.
Mood called the plastic bag ban a step in the right direction but the NSFM wants more to be done. She said they continue to push for the EPR to begin in Nova Scotia.
