The Whale Sanctuary Project in Guysborough County has taken another significant step.
The province has issued a 20-year lease, renewable for another 20 years for the marine sanctuary area at Port Hilford Bay in Indian Harbour. Project officials say this announcement builds on a groundbreaking ceremony in June and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs. The site will care for whales retiring from marine parks.
Project CEO Charles Vinick says this is a landmark moment, as the lease provides certainty, allowing it to move confidently to the next phase of construction, continue building the infrastructure needed to care for the whales, and demonstrates that sanctuaries are no longer simply an idea, but an achievable reality.
