Order of Nova Scotia Inductees includes Two with Local Connections

A pair of residents with local connections were honoured as Order of Nova Scotia recipients.

Lt. Gov. Arthur J LeBlanc, chancellor of the order of Nova Scotia, announced the five award winners, including New Glasgow’s Francis Dorrington and Ingonish’s Ann MacLean.

Dorrington was the first African Nova Scotian elected to New Glasgow public office, to serve on

the Nova Scotia School Board executive, and to serve as the director of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. He served on New Glasgow town council for 21 years, served four terms as deputy mayor and worked as acting mayor on 1987. He worked to revitalize and renovate community infrastructures, such as New Glasgow Town Hall, New Glasgow town schools, and the Aberdeen Hospital.

He also helped organized the New Glasgow Black Gala Homecoming Committee and served as their first Chairperson. He is described as an invaluable community mentor, and role model for generations of Nova Scotians.

MacLean worked as a mental health therapist, social worker, addictions treatment supervisor

and director, and Vice President of Community Health. She helped found the Metropolitan Mental Health Group Homes Association and was a founding member of the Tearmann Society for Abused Women. An early promoter of the determinants of health, she changed attitudes about mental health, addiction, and domestic violence.

MacLean was the longest serving Mayor of New Glasgow and the first female mayor, overseeing the establishment of watershed management and water treatment facility, the redevelopment of the Riverfront, including Glasgow Square Theatre, and downtown revitalization.

MacLean is the only Atlantic Canadian woman to be elected President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

A November 26 ceremony at Province House is set to recognize this year’s recipients.
