Paper Excellence Loans Money to Northern Pulp for Severance, Salaries and Retiree Benefits

Sep 26, 2020 | Local News

The parent company of the closed Northern Pulp mill in Pictou County says it has received approval from the British Columbia Supreme Court to loan money to Northern Pulp so that remaining severance, salary continuation and retiree benefits can be made to the company’s workforce affected by the mill’s hibernation.

Northern Pulp had initially requested the court allow the company to fund the remaining severance, salary continuation, and retiree benefits as part of its voluntary Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act interim financing proposal.  The application was denied.  Paper Excellence and Northern Pulp developed a new proposal approved by the court allowing Paper Excellence to loan money to Northern Pulp to fund the payments.

For the remainder of the year, Paper Excellence says Northern Pulp will work with the court appointed monitor to preserve the value of its assets, shut down of the Boat Harbour Effluent Treatment Facility, explore alternatives for the restarting the mill and take the appropriate steps to obtain approvals needed to restart.
