The Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation finds itself in some elite company. It has been awarded a financial performance certificate that places the community in the top ten per cent of the best managed First Nations in Canada. The certificate was issued following a review of the band’s financial performance over the past five years by the Vancouver-based First Nations Financial Management Board.
Paqtnkek Chief Paul Prosper says this is great news, because it demonstrates the band is diligent in its financial management practices. Prosper says it allows the band to access loan funding at favourable rates.
Paqtnkek also received some good news from the Canada Revenue Agency. The band is now eligible to receive gifts from registered charities and the band can issue official receipts to donors. It means donors can claim a tax credit or deduction.
