Pictou Town Council discussed a request from the YMCA to lower the municipal taxes on the property it operates on Water Street, which includes a child care centre. At its current assessment and at the commercial rate, the annual tax bill is about 45 thousand dollars. The Y wrote a letter to council asking if they could receive a lower tax rate, as they are a non-profit group. While Mayor Jim Ryan and council acknowledged the good and important work being down by the YMCA in town, they were reluctant to make a motion to either write down the full bill or tax at a residential rate, citing the impact it would have on the town’s finances. Council asked town staff to prepare some options on the Y’s tax bill to present to council at their next meeting.
