Pictou County Council looks to put the Brakes on Speeding Drivers

Oct 6, 2020 | Local News

Pictou County Council wants the province to help them slow down speedy drivers. Council has purchased several Speed Detection Devices (SDDs), which display the speed of approaching drivers, and have been shown to decrease the number and severity of speeders.

However, current provincial highway policy does not allow an SDD to be placed on roads which don’t have changes in their speed limit. This means there are many rural roads that, although councilors get complaints about speeding, can’t have an SDD installed unless they first undergo a traffic study. Council is writing a letter to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal asking them to loosen such restrictions. They also want TIR to place more speed limit signs on roads that are currently unmarked.
