Provincial Officials Recommend Residents to Test their Well Water Regularly

May 14, 2019 | Local News

The province is reminding people to have their well water tested regularly.

Last week, Health Canada announced the adoption of a health based guideline for a safe level of manganese in drinking water. Dr. Robert Strang, chief medical officer of health for the province, said evidence shows consuming manganese in drinking water beyond the guideline of .12 milligrams per litre over a prolonged period of time can adversely affect brain development in children and memory, attention, and movement in adults. Strang said water testing is important for everyone with private wells.

A release from the province states about 40 per cent of Nova Scotian households draw water from private wells. When asked how people can test their water, Strang said the simple way is to go on to the Nova Scotia Environment and look under drinking water. He said there will be a list of places for testing, adding collection bottles are required and there are instructions about to take the sample.
