Antigonish County District RCMP has referred an investigation into a fatal crash in the Monastery area to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT).
Police say on Saturday evening, July 18th officers were conducting patrols for impaired driving on Highway 4. At around 11:20 that evening, an officer attempted to pull a car over on Cape Jack Road, but the vehicle fled. In the interest of public safety, the officer did not pursue the vehicle. The car later left the road and crashed in the ditch. The officer immediately provided first aid while awaiting EHS and other first responders.
The driver, a 19-year-old Havre Boucher man, the only occupant in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The matter was referred to SiRT which independently investigates all serious incidents which arise from the actions of police in Nova Scotia. There does not have to be an allegation of wrongdoing.
