Richmond County Council approves budget; former Warden votes against it

Jun 2, 2020 | Local News

The councillor for district 5 voted against proposed Area Rates, as well as Richmond County’s budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

Jason MacLean told council he would not support the final budget because council held no discussions about eliminating or maintaining some Area Rates.

The former warden said it’s unfair to refuse grant money to groups and communities, while continuing to have one district pay for another’s Area Rate.

Despite MacLean’s nay vote, Richmond County’s $13,769,100 budget was approved, keeping the residential tax rate at 80 cents and the commercial rate at $2.10.

Council also approved a Five-Year Capital Investment Plan which includes upgrades to the Richmond Arena, as well as work to the Arichat-Petit de Grat sewer plant, and to the Arichat water treatment plant.

Although they were approved, District 4 councillor Gilbert Boucher raised the issue of different Area Rates in his district where some residents are being charged 9 cents, and others 10 cents. He did vote to approve the budget but he wants to revisit this issue.
