2026 marks the 100 year anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion, which saw official incorporation by a special act of parliament on July 17, 1926.

Tim Hinds, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Arras Branch 59 in Antigonish , said the Great War Veterans Association started an Antigonish branch in May of 1918. They later became part of the Legion family in May of 1930.

When asked about the importance of the Legion anniversary, Hinds said the legion honors all veterans and helps serves the community. For instance, Hinds pointed to the Antigonish Arena, noting the local legion drove the fundraising for the project. He also pointed to the partnership with CACL in sharing the East Coast Credit Union Social Enterprise Centre.

Several national events will mark the anniversary, including Royal Canadian Mint issued coins. Hinds said the local branch will also recognize the anniversary with events, the plans for which are underway.

Canadian Radio Awards: 989 XFM Small Market Station of The Year

Broadcast Dialogue has announced the winners of the inaugural Canadian Radio Awards, which we’ve dubbed “The Howards” after our publisher emeritus Howard Christensen.

When Howard, a radio veteran and one of the original Broadcast News anchors, founded Broadcast Dialogue in 1992, he saw a need for both timely delivery of Canadian broadcast industry news, but also recognized the importance of creating a sense of community.

989 XFM is very proud to be the winner of the 2020 Station of Year – Small Market award.
