Staff and council in the town of Pictou are getting raises. CAO Kyle Slaunwhite told council that a collective agreement was negotiated with Public Works staff who are represented by CUPE.
The agreement was for a 14% raise over a period of four years, retroactive to April 1, 2022 and concluding March 31, 2026. Council voted to accept the agreement. Council also approved a plan suggested by CAO Slaunwhite that non-union staff, as well as council, receive raises similar to the collective agreement for the fiscal years 2022/23 and 2023/24.
In voting for the motion, Councillor Dan Currie noted that it makes a lot more sense to raise councillor’s pay in small steps along with staff raises, rather than waiting several years and voting for a large increase to keep up with the cost of living.
