Local seafood businesses have received support from the provincial government.
The province provided a combined $2.22 million in funding to 20 projects through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Energy Efficiency Innovation Fund.
In Antigonish County, DSB Fisheries got $348,800 to convert their lobster fishing vessel into a hybrid propulsion system allowing for the reduction of fuel use. Fat Tuna Fisheries picked up $350,000 to convert multi-species fishing vessels with a hybrid propulsion system to provide lower energy costs for the company. Town Point Oysters got $350,000 for the electrification of an oyster barge that will be charged with existing solar infrastructure.
In Pictou County, North Nova Seafoods picked up $60,000 for a roof-mounted solar photovoltaic system at its processing facility, and Aqua Production Systems got over $26,000 for a roof-mounted solar photovoltaic system at its facility for designing and building live seafood holding systems.
A release from the province states the the funding is helping seafood and aquaculture businesses across Nova Scotia invest in new technology, reduce energy and fuel costs, modernize their operations and remain competitive in an industry that supports communities and jobs across the province.
