The apprentices for the Sisters of St. Martha’s New Growers program are pleased with their progress to date. They are now looking to reach out to customers in the area.
The program is designed to give aspiring farmers the opportunity to start their own business. Andrew McGillicuddy and Olivia Gowan recently moved back to the region from British Columbia; both have roots in the maritimes. McGillicuddy is a New Brunswick native and Gowan is from Sydney. Gowan says they’re hoping to have their first crop harvested in early May.
Gowan says what they harvest will be included in the Antigonish Farmers’ Market on-line store. Gowan says they are enjoying the experience so far, and immersing themselves in the Antigonish community.
