The parent company of the Sobeys grocery store chain is reporting a strong first quarter
. Stellarton based Empire Company says it posted net earnings of $191.9 million dollars, compared to $130.6 million during the same period last year. That’s an increase of 47 per cent.

Sales for the quarter were up by 9 per cent.
The company has also announced it has begun to test and implement a store curbside pick up service at a number of Sobeys locations in Nova Scotia through its Voila on-line grocery market.
Empire has also launched a new three year strategy it calls Project Horizon, a growth plan focusing on business expansion and accelerating e-commerce.
